We needed a quick, local playground to visit while we waited for traffic to drop off for our trip to Canobie Lake Park- so we headed over to Cole School in Norwell.

Now I need to make three things quickly clear:

  • I am VERY comfortable with robust play. I don't mind kids climbing, jumping, or taking reasonable risks on playgrounds.
  • My staff and I give kids space, but monitor our kids really closely as they play.
  • I love Norwell Schools. I'm not mad at them.

But oh my Heavens, this piece of equipment at the Cole School playground was a nightmare. Before I could even get across the playground to assess it's proper use, 9 kids were on it, turning it rapidly. Tyler almost lost his head. Jennie fell off and got stepped on. Christian's foot got lodged.

I made them all get off. I limited the amount of kids. I tried to make them sit. I banned it's use. We tried again. It was just simply impossible, so I had them all get in the van and we left.

In full disclosure, I broke my arm on something similar as a child, so I am very wary of them and was surprised to see it. We looked into it and learned it is an adaptive piece of equipment. This STUNNED our reviewers, who have learned to notice, appreciate, and use adaptive equipment. To quote one 110-year-old reviewer, "What the heck? How is this safe for a child in a wheelchair? It would have to be turned so slowly. How is that fun?"

If you want to use the spinning thing, wear a helmet.

The spinning thing almost decapitated me.
— Tyler, 10
Reviewers were like moths to a flame for this thing before I could even get across the playground to establish common sense safety rules.

I liked the adaptive swing. The seat was like a spaceship.

"Katy was very grumpy and anxious about the spinning thing."  Why yes, yes I was.
